Tauck is expanding its single traveler program for 2009, either waiving or significantly reducing the single supplement on 106 departures of 22 land and cruise itineraries in Europe and North America.
According to Tauck, nearly a quarter of the itineraries in the program have had their supplement waived entirely, and the average supplement reduction is 70%. This translates into savings as high as $3,000, with an average savings of $1,276.
Additional price reductions through Tauck's "Partner Savings" program, in which Tauck passes savings offered by its supplier along to Tauck guests, also apply to a number of itineraries in the singles program.
Single program itineraries include five European river cruises and five "Tauck At Sea" small ship ocean cruises, including four Mediterranean voyages. Land tours include five European journeys from Tauck's "A Week In" collection and seven trips in the US and Canada.
"The single supplement can be a significant barrier for many solo travelers, and in a tough economy, it can loom even larger," said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar. "We've done our best to reduce it or eliminate it on selected trips and departures for a number of years, but this year our team has gone above and beyond to make sure that solo travelers get the very best value possible with Tauck."
Mahar also added that eliminating or reducing the single supplement typically assures that there will be several solo travelers on the same itinerary.
"Having other solo travelers along provides camaraderie and companionship at meals, and eliminates any self-consciousness that a single traveler might otherwise feel."
Among the itineraries on which the single supplement was eliminated are: Holland and Belgium in Spring river cruise, Budapest to the Black Sea river cruise, A Week In Scotland land tour, Best of the Canadian Rockies land tour and Prince Edward Island & Nova Scotia land tour. wwwbellecruises.com

Princess and Holland America to Cut Alaska Cruises in 2010
March 27, 2009
Princess and Holland America to Cut Alaska Cruises in 2010
On Tuesday, we reported that Carnival Corp. is planning to reduce capacity in Alaska in 2010. Today, we learned that two of the lines, slated to cut cruises, are major Alaska players Holland America and Princess. Carnival Cruise Lines already announced changes to its 2010 Alaska itineraries, as has rival line Royal Caribbean.
Princess will reduce Alaska capacity by 16 percent (about 48,000 passengers) next year. The line has eight ships deployed to Alaska in 2009, but will drop to seven ships in 2010. According to spokeswoman Karen Candy, Star Princess will not be returning to Alaska in 2010 -- its new destination has yet to be announced -- and Sapphire Princess will take over its sister ship's seven-night, roundtrip, Seattle cruises. So in 2010, only three ships (Diamond Princess, Coral Princess and Island Princess) will offer Gulf of Alaska cruises between Vancouver and Whittier (compared to four in 2009), and two (Sapphire Princess and Golden Princess) will offer seven-night, roundtrip, Seattle itineraries. The sixth and seventh ships, yet to be named, will offer 10-night cruises, roundtrip from San Francisco, and 14-night cruises, roundtrip, from Seattle.
Holland America has a similar plan, as we learned from spokeswoman Sarah Scoltock. While it will keep eight ships in Alaska this year and next, it will decrease the number of ships sailing Gulf of Alaska cruises between Vancouver and Seward from three ships to two and will have four ships sailing, roundtrip, from Seattle. One of those, Amsterdam, will offer new, 14-night cruises with calls in less-frequented ports, including Homer and Kodiak, and -- for the first time ever for a big-ship cruise line -- regularly scheduled calls at the port of Anchorage (rather than the feeder ports of Seward or Whittier). While the number of ships will remain the same, Holland America will move ships around -- such that, ultimately, it will bring 11,000 fewer guests to Alaska.
Although both lines have yet to announce details of their 2010 land-tour offerings, fewer cruises starting or ending in Whittier and Seward will certainly mean less business for the buses, trains and hotels that both cruise lines own in Alaska. However, more Seattle roundtrips will be good news for travelers on tight budgets because Gulf of Alaska itineraries are, typically, more expensive for consumers, due to pricey, one-way airfares into Canada and out of Alaska (or vice versa).

Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas Will Have New Baltimore Home

Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas Will Have New Baltimore Home
As cruise lines scramble to provide more drive-to, flight-free options for travelers during difficult economic times, Baltimore has landed another major year-round addition. Less than a year after Carnival announced it would homeport Carnival Pride year-round in the Maryland port in 2009, Royal Caribbean has revealed that it will follow suit with the 80,700-ton, 2,252-passenger Enchantment of the Seas, which will offer cruises to the Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean and Canada & New England starting in 2010. Enchantment of the Seas will become the largest ship ever to homeport out of Baltimore, a port within driving distance for tens of millions of people.
Enchantment's first roundtrip Baltimore cruise will depart on June 18, 2010. The eight-night Canada & New England voyage includes stops in Portland, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; Halifax; Bar Harbor; and Boston. During the following summer and fall months, Enchantment will sail five-night Bermuda cruises, featuring two-night stops at Kings Wharf; nine-night Eastern Caribbean cruises with stops in San Juan, St. Thomas, the Dominican Republic's Samana and Labadee, RCI's private island; and three nine-night Canada & New England cruises, offering the same itinerary as the eight-nighter, but with an added sea day.
Royal Caribbean will announce Enchantment of the Seas' winter and spring roundtrip Baltimore itineraries at a later date.
The move by RCI significantly boosts the itineraries and berths currently offered out of Baltimore by its smaller 74,140-ton, 1,950-passenger Grandeur of the Seas, which spends less than half the year sailing out of Maryland (summer and fall). Enchantment of the Seas boasts Royal Caribbean signatures like Chops Grill steakhouse, Boleros Latin lounge and an expansive sun deck. For more about the ship, read our review.
Other lines, including Carnival and Celebrity, have already announced new placements in Northeast homeports. Beginning September 13, 2009, the 88,500-ton, 2,124-passsenger Carnival Pride will offer two different seven-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries out of Baltimore. Celebrity Mercury will sail Eastern and Southern Caribbean cruises out of Charm City from late 2009 through early 2010.

MSC Cruise Ship to Host G8 Summit in Sardinia
March 23, 2009
MSC Cruise Ship to Host G8 Summit in Sardinia
A group of world leaders from U.S. President Barack Obama to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be taking to the sea this summer. The Italian government is hosting this year's G8 Summit in La Maddalena, Sardinia -- and has chosen MSC Cruises' 133,500-ton, 3,300-passenger MSC Fantasia to accommodate Obama, Brown and other guests.
The G8, or "Group of Eight," is a group of heads of state and government from eight countries -- France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada -- that meets several times a year to discuss global issues such as foreign affairs, financial affairs, trade, justice, security, the environment, agriculture and labor. The organization actually formed in the early 70's as G6 (all of the above minus Russia and Canada, which joined later). The country holding the G8 Presidency, which rotates yearly among the countries, is responsible for hosting and organizing the meetings that pave the way for the yearly Summit, and the three-day Summit itself. This year, it's Italy's turn.
Aside from the fact that MSC Cruises is based in Italy, why was MSC Fantasia chosen to house G8 participants? One of this year's hot topics is climate change, and because of that, the Italian government has committed to planning a Summit that will have zero impact on the environment. To that end, the selection of MSC Fantasia is apropos: MSC's fleet is one of the greenest afloat, and MSC Fantasia in particular debuted in December 2008 with state-of-the-art energy-saving systems. For example, air-conditioning is regulated by a digital device that takes into account whether the windows and doors are open or closed. Also, its hull is painted with a non-toxic substance that helps lower carbon dioxide emissions through the reduction of fuel.
La Maddalena, the host town for the actual three-day Summit, was also chosen with climate change in mind. Scientists and naturalists frequent the coastline of Sardinia to study its rich ecosystem -- animal and plant species native to the Mediterranean but now extinct elsewhere. The ship will be moored somewhere off the coast of Sardinia for the Summit, which is taking place 8 to 10 July. According to the official Web site for G8, the Civil Protection Department, MSC Cruises and Navy experts are currently surveying the area between La Maddalena and the island of Santo Stefano for a precise mooring point.
At this point, we don't know whether Obama et al will be ensconced in the ship's exclusive, cozy suite complex known as the Yacht Club (though we have to imagine they won't be relegated to inside cabins). An MSC spokesperson in the U.K. could not give any more details "due to security reasons," and could only confirm that the line will indeed host the G8 Summit.

Pacific Delight Tours Has 'March Madness
Mon Mar 23 2009, by Travel Trade Staff
Pacific Delight Tours has a 'March Madness' promotion for all bookings made during the month, which includes discounts of up to $500 per couple on select itineraries from the company's Gold Exclusive program.
Discounts of up to $250 per couple will also be available on itineraries from the Gold Experience program.
The $500 discount applies to the 13-day China and Yangtze River Gold Exclusive, which includes three nights in Beijing, two nights in Xi'an, one night in Guilin, three nights on a Yangtze River cruise and three nights in Shanghai.
According to Jerry Pi, president of Pacific Delight Tours, the company has seen a lot of activity from this offer - with customers booking last-minute trips as close as 30 days out from departure. The Three Gorges Dam via the Yangtze River is a significant draw, he said.
"With raised water levels, the new Three Gorges Dam has been created, which allows new destinations and access to sites previously unreachable by the normal river. We now have access to more inland areas and landmarks within mainland China," Pi said.
The Gold Exclusive differs from the Gold Experience in that it offers upgraded rooms, balconies and suites - all on the Victoria Cruises portion of the trip - as well as private tours and an intimate group size of approximately 10-16 people. Also included are a welcome cocktail party, a farewell banquet dinner and full escort service while in China.
The Gold Experience program, while still deluxe, hosts up to 26 guests and offers cruisers standard cabins for the cruising segment of the trip.
Land-only pricing for 2009 departures of Pacific Delight Tours' 13-day China and Yangtze River Gold Exclusive Gold Exclusive begins at $4,740 per person, double occupancy for bookings made during Pacific Delight Tours' "March Madness" promotion, though March 31. International air is not included but can be purchased from Pacific Delight at the time of booking.
March Madness was launched to stimulate sales just prior to peak season, explained a spokesperson from Pacific Delight Tours. Commission rates for agents supporting this promotion are said to be "among the highest" but exact figures were not available.

Royal Caribbean Announces 2010 Alaska Vacation Season
Published on: March 20, 2009
Royal Caribbean International has announced its 2010 Alaska vacation season. The cruise line unveiled 37 sailings for the season, with seven- to 14-night itineraries aboard Radiance of the Seas and the Rhapsody of the Seas. Sailings will depart San Diego; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; and Vancouver, B.C., and will call at total of 13 ports, eight of which are Alaskan. Cruisetours also are available extension and travel beyond the ports into the rugged interior of Alaska. The cruises and cruisetours are now open for booking.
Guests sailing on the Radiance of the Seas have a choice of 21 cruisetours, 19 of which feature journeys aboard the Wilderness Express, Royal Caribbean’s glass-domed railcars. Cruisetour highlights include stays in Denali with a tour into the National Park; tram rides from the ski slopes of Alyeska, soaring 2,300 feet up to the apex of Mount Alyeska; and stays in the historic village of Talkeetna, at the base of Mount McKinley, North America’s tallest peak, where they can participate in optional activities like jet boating and flight-seeing. Among the shore excursions: At Icy Strait Point, guests can ride the world’s longest zip line -- 5,300 feet long with a 1,300-foot vertical drop. Another excursion is sailing aboard a commercial crabbing vessel in the Bering Sea.
Alternating north- and southbound seven-night itineraries between Seward and Vancouver every Friday, the Radiance of the Seas will call at four Alaskan ports: Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, the only wilderness port in Alaska. The ship also will visit Hubbard Glacier, the world’s largest advancing calving glacier. The Radiance of the Seas also will offer two special Ultimate Alaska itineraries: a 13-night San Diego-to-Vancouver cruise departing May 8, featuring a call at Nanaimo, B.C., last visited by a Royal Caribbean ship in May 2007, and a 14-night sailing in the reverse direction departing Sept. 10.
The Rhapsody of the Seas will offer a seven-night roundtrip itinerary from Seattle and ply the Inside Passage with calls at Juneau and Skagway, as well as at Victoria, B.C. Highlights will include a cruise through the 32-mile Tracy Arm Fjord and visits to Sawyer Glacier. For more information, call 866-801-6829 or visit www.bellecruises.com

Cunard Unveils New Queen Elizabeth
Tue Mar 17 2009, by Travel Trade Staff
Cunard Line has revealed the itinerary and design plans for its newest ocean liner, the Queen Elizabeth, scheduled to enter service on Oct. 12, 2010. Queen Elizabeth will be the third new ocean liner to be introduced by Cunard in six years and will be the second largest Cunard ship ever built.
Queen Elizabeth will feature the unique Cunard traditions that link it with sister ships Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, but will also debut some new features.
"Cunard holds the distinction of sailing the most famous ocean liners in the world," said Cunard president Carol Marlow in announcing the Queen Elizabeth. "For more than 70 years there has been an 'Elizabeth' in the fleet and this beautiful modern-day celebration of our past 'Elizabeths' will ensure this proud tradition continues far into this century."
The Queen Elizabeth is named after Cunard's first Queen Elizabeth, which launched in 1938 as the world's largest liner. The new ship references its predecessor in interior grandeur, décor and style, but adds some modern twists. Traditional elements will include double and triple height public rooms, intricately detailed interiors with rich wood paneling, mosaics, chandeliers and marble touches.
In addition to the extensive Cunard entertainment programs onboard, Queen Elizabeth will offer some unique programs harking back to the days of the original Queen Elizabeth, including country house parties, piano evenings and a variety of dancing from the 30s and 40s.
Queen Elizabeth's maiden 2010 season will consist of six voyages, calling on 32 distinct ports in 18 countries. The Maiden Voyage will depart from its homeport of Southampton on Oct. 12, 2010 en route to the Atlantic Isles. The 13-night voyage will call at Vigo (for Santiago de Compostela), Lisbon, Seville (Cadiz), Gran Canaria (Las Palmas), Tenerife (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), La Palma (Santa Cruz de La Palma) and Madeira (Funchal).
The ship will then embark on five celebratory inaugural voyages.
Reservations for Queen Elizabeth's maiden voyages and inaugural season will be open for booking on April 2. Visit www.cunard.com.

The eco-friendly cruise documents provide guests with concise and easily accessible cruise and air travel details. Ship cruises into big welcome
Passengers of the Deutschland cruise ship were the first to experience a new initiative by Qatar Tourism & Exhibitions Authority (QTEA) officials to ease entry procedures and warmly welcome visitors to the country.
The 400 passengers and 260 crewmembers of the Deutschland, a tourism ship cruising through the Gulf, were greeted on their arrival on ground in “true Qatari hospitality”.
The visitors arrived to a musical welcome by a Qatari band, and were offered Arabic coffee and dates as they watched a falconry demonstration.
“We will always remember our first steps in Qatar, and we are eager to see more of this charming country,” a German couple remarked.
Lieutenant-Colonel Nasser bin Abdullah al-Thani, the director of Borders and Passports Department at the Ministry of Interior, was on hand to receive the ship.
“When the department received a request from the cruise ship to make a stopover in Qatar, all the departments concerned immediately worked to issue entry permits for the ship.
“We also moved to provide the documents necessary for them to visit the landmarks in the country, in addition to easing entry procedures and exit of vehicles used by the tourists,” he said.
“We co-ordinated with the Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority and Doha Sea Port Customs to provide comfort and leisure to the tourists, who were made up of people of 25 nationalities, and to ease the process of their exit from the port and their visit to the landmarks in the country,” the director added.
Lieutenant-Colonel Abdul Hadi Zabin, the assistant director of Borders and Passports Department, elaborated: “The number of counters at Doha Sea Port were increased to 12. The entry procedures for transit ships were simplified.”
The tourists were given brochures and maps by QTEA personnel, and were given a briefing on Qatar and the numerous activities and attractions they could enjoy during their stay in the country.
Organised by Gulf Adventures, the tour agent of this cruise, tourists are offered a desert safari to Khor Al Udaid, a tour of the fine artworks of the Museum of Islamic Art, an extended tour of the capital, including a stroll on the Corniche and of Souq Waqif.
Golf addicts could as well appreciate an early round at Doha Golf Club.
Commenting on the new initiative, QTEA chairman Ahmed al-Nuaimi said: “Our efforts to have new visa procedures for cruise passengers represent a new way of putting into practice our strategy to encourage people to stay for 48 hours.
“It will enable us to attract travellers to Qatar, and help them discover our culture and our unique landscape.
“We have been discussing with major tour operators and cruising companies the possibility of adding Qatar on the Middle East cruising map. “
